Ajax is a town in the east of the Greater Toronto Area. It was named after a Royal Navy cruiser and is a popular place for people who work in Toronto to live. The laid-back town is right on Lake Ontario, has many walking trails, and has a rich culture.
People who come to Toronto don’t often go this far east, but Ajax is a great place to spend a holiday, especially if you want to get away from the busy city. The 10 best things to do in Ajax are listed here.
1. Take a walk along the water
The 740 km Waterfront Trail goes from Niagara-on-the-Lake to Brockville, heading east. Along the way, it goes through Ajax. The trail goes right along Lake Ontario and has some of the best views in the world.
In Ajax, the trail goes through some beautiful parks, such as Paradise Park, Rotary Park, and the Ajax Waterfront Park. It is also connected to the Trans Canada Trail, which is the world’s longest network of recreational trails.
Make sure to check out Veteran’s Point Gardens and Lion’s Point while you’re on the part of the trail called “The Ajax.” At the end of the walk, you can rest at Lakeside Park.
2. Go to the beach.
Paradise Beach is next to the Waterfront Trail, but it is also a popular destination in its own right. It’s the main beach area of the town and a great place to spend a sunny day.
There are many cottages in the area, some of which are owned by wealthy Torontonians. The beach is open to the public. Still, it’s a nice, family-friendly stretch of water that everyone can enjoy.
On the other side of the beach is Paradise Park, which has grass, trees, and picnic tables. Visitors can also sit on benches near the water to relax and take in the view.
3. Check out art

Local artists’ work can be seen in many places in Ajax, such as the Town Hall and the Village Community Centre. A number of the pieces can also be seen outside.
Take a walk around town and look at the art in parks, on buildings, and at the entrances of many buildings. Some of the town’s trails even have pieces of it.
Be sure to look at the mural on the outside wall of the entrance to the Village Community Centre, the abstract metal sculpture at the Ajax Town Hall, and the huge “Solar Sail” at the Ajax Operations Centre. The Totem Pole at Duffins Trail Head and the interactive sculpture at Lion’s Point are also not to be missed.
The Ajax Casino, with its 900 slot machines, is one of the best things to do in Ajax. But it has a lot more than that. For example, you can play electronic blackjack, baccarat, and roulette.
The whole casino is run by computers, and when you leave, your points are turned into cash. They also have deals every week, like drawing for cash or points.
The casino is open 24 hours a day, every day of the year. Even better, there is a restaurant right there that serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner.
5. Go shopping for crafts
The Pickering Markets is the best place in town to buy handmade items made by people in the area. The huge indoor market is not in Ajax. Instead, it is in Pickering, which is just west of Ajax.
At the market, more than 500 sellers sell everything from antiques to homemade baked goods. Grab a painting, a sculpture, a candle, a silver pendant, or even a diamond ring.
After you’ve walked around and looked at all the booths, get a massage to relax your muscles. You can also eat tasty food like roasted chicken, sushi, ice cream, and tacos.
6. Put yourself in the middle of nature
Ajax is home to the Greenwood Conservation Area as well as the parks along the Waterfront Trail. Those who love nature will love exploring this part of town.
There are forests, grasslands, and a network of hiking trails in the Greenwood Conservation Area. Signs along the trails not only show hikers where to go, but also tell them about the wildlife and history of the area.
On its trails, you can hike, cross-country ski, or have a picnic. Along the creek, which is full of rainbow trout, you can even go fishing.
7. Be a Viking
At BATL, you can be a Viking for a day if you’ve ever wanted to (Backyard Axe Throwing League). The company’s founder, Matt Wilson, turned this backyard hobby into a dream. The company is in Pickering, which is just a few minutes away from Ajax.
BATL has an indoor axe-throwing area, as well as a kitchen and a bar. On Friday nights from 6 to 9 pm and on Saturday and Sunday afternoons, walk-ins are welcome.
Spend a day as a Viking and throw an axe at a target while being guided by staff. It is both exciting and relaxing, and many people get hooked after just one time.
8. Take part in a race
Since 1969, Quarter Horse Racing has been shown live at Ajax Downs, and it still does so today. Spend a Sunday watching live horse races on the track or on one of the 70 screens.
There are over 800 slot machines and a full 6-furlong oval racetrack at Ajax Downs. Plus, you can bet on races outside of the track all year long in the viewing area.
From May to October, there are live races, but the track is open all year. It even has a restaurant that serves food around the clock.
9. Make a circle
Ajax has a network of 140 kilometers of trails that are great for cyclists of all skill levels. Some of the trails are off-road, while others are paved or shared lanes.
Rent a bike in town and ride it along the water, through the city center, and into the Greenwood Conservation Area. It’s a wonderful way to see Ajax and get some fresh air.
Biking is a great way to get around Ajax and see the sights and enjoy the scenery. There are even events like TrailFest and the annual Falcon Fondo that involve cycling.
10. Play golf
There are some great places to play golf in Ajax, so golf fans won’t be bored. In fact, there are four golf courses in the town itself, and there are a few more in the areas around it.
With two courses that are known all over the province, Deer Creek Golf Club is probably the best of the bunch. The 27-hole course is split into three nines, and tournaments are often held on the par-71 championship course.
The Annandale Golf & Curling Club has an 18-hole course, and the Riverside Golf Club has a 9-hole course. People who want to golf with their kids should go to Carruther’s Creek Golf and Country Club, which is run by a family.
